The Ethics of Re-Humanizing Psychotherapy
Georgia State University; The Psychology Clinic for Assessment, Therapy and Research & The Clinical Psychology Program in the Department of Psychology of Georgia State University.
Atlanta, GA. May 12, 2006.

Psychotherapists are often trained to maintain therapeutic relationships that are strictly objective. Professional codes of ethics censure therapists for engaging in professional relationships deemed "too personal." In stark contrast, research suggests that most therapeutic failures are caused by relationships that are not personal enough, rather than relationships that are too personal.

This workshop will present a more personal, mutually subjective model for the therapeutic relationship. Drawing on the earliest roots of psychotherapy, it will re-examine the primary purpose of interpersonal boundaries: to facilitate connection rather than maintain distance.

The ethical implications of this model will be discussed within the context of the current APA Code of Ethics and research relevant to an understanding of the therapeutic relationship.

The Process of Change in Couples Psychotherapy
Georgia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy: Annual Spring Conference.
St. Simons Island, GA. May 5, 2006.

Research and training in psychotherapy with couples tends to focus on the technology of change - that is, on the effectiveness of various techniques designed to help a couple . We have been less attentive to the actual process whereby couples change. The premise of this workshop is that we cannot effectively help couples change without a more complete understanding of the process of change. Two models of change in working with couples will be outlined. The presenter with then compare and contrast these two models, and suggest how they can be integrated over the course of psychotherapy with a couple.
